How Reading at the Gym Made Me Smarter and Stronger
My New Obsession: Reading on the Treadmill While Training Like a Savage
I don’t get a lot of time to myself.
Between running a business, raising three kids, and trying to stay healthy, time is a luxury I don’t really have. I sleep about four hours a night — and that’s just enough to keep me functional.
So when I hit the gym, I don’t waste a second.
For 30 minutes, I go into full crazy mode.
I lift weights for about 15 minutes, no breaks, going as heavy as I can while still keeping good form. The goal is simple: burn the muscles, get stronger, and get out.
But here’s the part that surprised me the most — and became my new obsession:
Reading. On. The. Treadmill.
I hit the tallest incline, get my heart rate up, and pull out whichever book I’m on that day. No scrolling. No podcasts. Just pages and sweat.
Yeah, I might look weird to everyone else in the gym — but it’s the only way I get my reading in without sacrificing family, business, or rest. Sometimes I read at home. Sometimes I sit in my car and read a few pages before I hit the warehouse.
But when I get on that treadmill with a book in hand, I feel aligned.
I’m training my mind and my body at the same time.
The Game-Changer: White Noise
Here’s the trick that made this habit next-level:
I put on white noise through my headphones.
It blocks out the gym music, the grunts, the treadmill squeaks, the small talk — all of it.
Once I discovered this, I locked in. My focus went through the roof.
It’s like putting my brain in a tunnel with just the book and my breath. Complete tunnel vision.
Why This Works for Me
-
Time Efficiency: I turn 30 minutes of cardio into 30 minutes of self-education
-
Focus Training: Reading while working out makes my brain tune out distractions
-
White Noise Hack: Headphones with white noise = instant tunnel vision
-
No Excuses: I don’t have time for Netflix. But I make time for growth
What I’m Reading
Some days it’s mindset books like Atomic Habits,
Some days it’s business strategy like The 10X Rule or Your Next Five Moves.
No matter the title, I know every page makes me better.
“Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education.”
— Jim Rohn
That quote drives this new habit. I’m not here to impress anyone in the gym. I’m here to win in every area of life.
Hustler’s Takeaway
If you feel like you don’t have time to read or train, maybe it’s time to stop thinking of them as two separate things.
You can build your body and your brain at the same time.
You can choose growth — even in the chaos.
This is just one of the ways I Hustle Smart, Not Hard.
